Continue The Tradition At ‘Dickens Of A Christmas’

Christmas
Roanoke is ready to welcome the most wonderful time of year, and for 37 years, we’ve rung in the holidays with the Dickens of a Christmas festival downtown.

When and Where

This event will be held on the first three Fridays of December around downtown Roanoke. The festivities begin at 5:30 p.m. on December 6, and at 6 p.m. on December 13 and 20. It concludes at 10 p.m. each evening. Entry to this family-friendly event is free.

Christmastime in Roanoke

Organizers expect this year’s Dickens of a Christmas to bring in as many as 40,000 people downtown over the course of the month. Each Friday, stores and restaurants will keep their doors open later so you can enjoy the nightlife and finish up all your Christmas shopping. A variety of entertainers will showcase their talents, from the Carolers of Christmas Past to the Plastic Musik percussive dance troop and a daring sword-swallower. You can see it all from a cozy carriage ride, or take on a DIY project at the fire-pit-heated Crafteria.

Special Events

The 37th annual holiday celebration will feature special events each Friday, starting with the opening ceremonies on December 6. That evening, the festival will begin with the City of Roanoke Christmas Tree Lighting, complete with a special appearance by Santa Claus. This tradition will occur at 6:15, and will also be aired on WDBJ7.

On December 13, arrive early to get a good spot for the City of Roanoke Christmas Parade. Starting at 6:30 p.m., the parade will showcase creative floats, marching bands, dancers, twirlers, and other groups from our community. In years past, we’ve seen eye-catching float designs like a snow-blowing Mount Crumpit and a Polar Express decked out in lights.

The final Friday promises a variety of fun activities, including the Mini Carnival with its Magic Carpet Slide and carousel. You can find the rides near the Christmas tree on Market Street as well as on Salem Avenue by the Taubman Museum of Art. At 6:30, there will also be a pet costume contest hosted by the RVSPCA. Registration for this event will be held at 5:30 at Wells Fargo Plaza.
