Inside The Museum
The museum’s internationally renowned rail collection is a big draw for train enthusiasts, featuring two classic and storied locomotives that are well worth a look on their own: the Norfolk & Western Class J 611 and the Class A 1218. But of course there’s lots more to see here; the museum’s Rail Yard has about 50 pieces of rolling stock – and, as if emphasizing the timelessness of this classic mode of transportation, modern-day trains frequently roll by on the tracks adjacent to the museum.
Inside the museum, you can explore other popular modes of transportation, from cars and trucks to planes and ships, as well as educational exhibits. All told, the museum’s collection includes about 2,500 automotive, aviation, transit, and other artifacts.
And if the kids (or you) have trouble bypassing a gift shop of any kind, the Museum Store here carries a fantastic selection of books, toys, DVDs, home or office memorabilia, and custom apparel to mark your visit. Sales from the store help support the museum’s mission of restoration and education.
The Virginia Museum of Transportation is open Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $10 for adults (19–59); $8 for seniors (60+), students with ID (19–25), and youth (13–18); and $6 for children (3–12). Members and kids under 3 get in for free.
