There’s been a lot going on at the History Museum of Western Virginia. Two years ago, it consolidated with the O. Winston Link Museum, and then last year, the museum added some new exhibits. All of this means the museum is even better than ever before. If you’ve yet to visit the History Museum of Western Virginia, now is the time to change that. Make plans to stop by this week. You won’t be disappointed.
Museum Highlights
The History Museum of Western Virginia has an impressive assortment of artifacts to explore. You can easily spend a couple of hours looking through everything. If you don’t have that much time, though, make sure you hit the highlights.
Rawrenoke Beads
Have you ever wondered how the city of Roanoke got its name? It’s such a unique name, so how did it come about?
Well, the city was named after “Rawrenoke” beads, and you can see these beads in person at the museum. This is a rare sight, so be sure to take it in. It’s interesting to see the beads that inspired a whole city.
Artifacts from Thomas Jefferson
Virginia and Thomas Jefferson have a long history, and you can see some of it firsthand when you visit the museum. The museum actually has one of Jefferson’s letters. Jefferson visited Peaks of Otter and then wrote about it in a letter and the museum got its hands on it. It’s amazing to see this historical artifact right here in the local museum.
You can also see a Jefferson-signed land grant. You’ll get goosebumps after looking through these artifacts.
Check Out Some Antiques
There are some cool antiques at the museum as well. You can look through objects that represent the culture of a time gone by and see Roanoke’s first retail-sold television. You can also check out an antique still that came from Patrick County. These are just a few examples of the antiques available.

A Look at the Early Days of Medicine
Medicine sure has changed a lot over the years. You can get a good idea of how much it has changed by looking at the Colonel William Fleming’s medical instruments. He was a local surgeon and soldier and was active in the state militia prior to and during the Revolution. These instruments were the instruments of the time, and when you see them, you will be very thankful that you didn’t grow up back then.
