Uncompromising Performance with Volvo XC90 Drive-E Power Play

Volvo XC90 RoanokeFor the most luxurious and spacious Volvo, buy for the XC90. This SUV is the result of the automaker’s efforts to create the new modular chassis technology known as the Scalable Product Architecture. It was developed in-house, and it will make it easier to enhance all of its models in the future. In addition to this new chassis technology, the XC90 features Drive-E Power Play to take its performance to the next level.

The Drive-E Powertrain

The performance comes from the Volvo XC90’s state-of-the-art powertrain known as Drive-E. This powertrain is a 2-liter 4-cylinder engine, which has been supercharged and turbocharged to generate 316 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque at 2,200 rpm to 4,500 rpm. The power plant is compact to reduce emissions and boost fuel economy while enhancing handling, as well.

How It Works

The supercharger in the engine enhances torque when driving at low or medium speeds. Once the turbocharger takes over, the supercharger disengages to boost efficiency and reduce friction. Between the supercharger and the turbocharger, this small engine is able to produce the output expected from much larger ones.

XC90’s Geartronic Transmission

To make the Drive-E system even more effective, the XC90 comes standard with a Geartronic 8-speed automatic transmission. This transmission has two overdrive speeds that save fuel, along with a lock-up function that bypasses the vehicle’s torque converter and reduces energy consumption. This way, you can shift manually using the shift lever on the console or the paddles on the steering wheel of the R-Design model or just stick to the fully automatic operation.

All-Wheel Drive with Instant Traction

To ensure that the XC90 delivers uncompromising performance year-round, it also comes standard with All-Wheel Drive with Instant Traction, an electronically controlled system. It relies on a fifth-generation coupling to distribute engine power between the rear and front wheels. Normally, the front wheels receive most of the power to boost efficiency. The system constantly monitors the rear wheels’ requirements for power and can transfer as much as 50 percent instantly.
