Extra Practice Transforms Team
An extra week of practice early in the season has helped cement the Hokies as the team to beat. The team was supposed to match up against East Carolina on Sept. 15, but the game was canceled. As of now, Virginia Tech has a lot of first and second-year players this year, and the team looked a little sluggish early on. The talent was there, but the guys were making the type of mistakes you’d expect from young players.
That extra week of practice let the coaching staff work on specific aspects of the game. They reviewed film from the first two contests of the season and then made improvements in practice.
This was especially true with the special teams. A group of freshmen defensive backs has a huge role during kickoffs and punts, and they needed some fine-tuning.
By the time the week was over, it was like a different team. The guys looked much sharper and ready to take on any competition.
