Standing sentry atop Mill Mountain and overlooking the surrounding valley and the Blue Ridge Mountains, the Roanoke Star is a regional icon. The structure, made from three concentric stars formed by 2,000 feet of neon tubing, welcomes visitors and reminds locals that they’re home. But when was the last time you took the time to visit the Star up close? It’s a quick and enjoyable way to pay respects to your hometown’s history and enjoy the beauty of our natural surroundings at the same time.
What to Do
You’ll want to take pictures, of course. The area is supremely photogenic, and there is a scenic overlook at the base of the Star that offers a breathtaking view of the region. Mill Mountain is also home to great hiking and biking trails, and there are plenty of fantastic spots to spread out a picnic and enjoy an alfresco meal while you enjoy the view.

Constructed in 1949, the Roanoke Star was originally intended to serve as a holiday decoration. Almost 70 years later, it has become an integral part of the area and an instantly recognizable representation of the Blue Ridge Mountain region. Standing 88.5 feet tall and weighing in at 10,000 pounds, the Roanoke Star is the largest freestanding man-made illuminated star in the world and is one of the area’s most photographed attractions.
The Roanoke Star is easily accessible from the Blue Ridge Parkway at Milepost 120. You can check out the current view via StarCam, a live camera feed mounted on the star.
