Wash Your Heavy Comforter Like A Pro

A folded rolls duvet is lying on the dresser against the background of a blurred window. Household.

Comforters, blankets, quilts, and duvets come in different sizes and materials. During the winter, you’ll likely use bedding that is warmer than your summer bedding. If you do, you’ll notice that the heavier bedding takes a bit more attention than lighter sheets and blankets. If you’re not sure how to handle cleaning your heavy comforters and quilts, follow this guide to do the job like a pro.

How Often Should I Wash My Comforter?

Unlike sheets and other light bedding you don’t need to wash heavy bedding every week. Heavy duvets, quilts and comforters only need to be washed two to three times a year. If you only use your heavy comforter during the winter, you only need to wash it twice. Once when you pull it out of storage and once before you pack it away again.

Do I Need to Wash My Duvet Cover?

If you have a duvet or heavy comforter, using a duvet cover can make laundry day a whole lot easier. The duvet cover is a whole lot lighter than the duvet or comforter that goes inside, so you can wash it weekly or as needed.

What Do I Need to Wash My Comforter?

You’ll need a high-capacity, front or top load washing machine and dryer to wash your heavy comforter. You’ll also need heavy-duty liquid laundry detergent and a solvent-based stain remover. You don’t need a large table to complete the laundry process but if you have one it will help.

How Do I Wash My Comforter?

  1. Start by pretreating any stains with a stain remover. Apply the stain remover and work it into the stain using your fingers or a soft bristle brush. Then, let it sit for at least 15 minutes.
  2. Next, select the cold or warm temperature setting on your washing machine and the delicate cycle. You should use just a little less detergent than recommended on the packaging.
  3. Remove your comforter from the washing machine and shake it out so that it will dry evenly, then tumble dry on low heat.
  4. Fold or roll your comforter as soon as it is dry. This will prevent it from wrinkling so you won’t have to iron it.
  5. Enjoy your fresh, clean comforter.
