Nature can be beautiful, and it can also be wild. Fortunately, you don’t have to go trekking into the wilderness to get a glimpse of some of earth’s fascinating creatures, because they’re right here in Roanoke at the Mill Mountain Zoo!

Mammals

Mill Mountain Zoo is home to a diverse collection of mammals – animals with backbones, fur, and relatively developed brains. This is the phylum that contains species like cats, dogs, and even humans, and when you visit the zoo, you’ll see other mammals from all round the world. Look out for the Asian small-clawed otter, a member of the weasel family that’s just as comfortable in the water as it is on land. You’ll also see the tremendous quills of the Indian crested porcupine, the unmistakable spots of the snow leopard, and the handsome coat of the red panda. At the zoo, you can even enjoy a longer look at some creatures you might have only ever glimpsed darting by at night, like the shy racoon or sly red fox.

Reptiles and Amphibians

Moving on to the cold-blooded community, you’ll encounter a variety of reptiles and amphibians at Mill Mountain Zoo. What exactly is the difference between these creatures? Take a closer look at each and you’ll see that reptiles are covered in dry scales, while amphibians have smooth, moist skin. Several turtle species reside at the zoo, including the red-eared slider, which has spread from its home in the Southern U.S. and Northern Mexico due to its popularity as a pet. Don’t miss the African spurred tortoise with its large, thick shell and unique spurs covering its limbs. The bright colors of the bumblebee dart frog may catch your eye with its vibrant yellow and bold black stripes.

Birds

You can observe birds of all feathers at the zoo, including the bald eagle. The red-billed blue magpie is the largest member of the crow family, while the blue-bellied roller has a head that might appear to have a head that’s oversized for its body. Wood ducks can sport a stunning iridescent sheen on their coats, while the northern bobwhite quail sports a feather pattern perfect for blending in with its surroundings. As you approach, you might hear the distinctive call of the sandhill crane long before you ever see it.
