Halloween is just around the corner, so you’ll need to start thinking about costumes. But buying costumes can get expensive. Also, sometimes there aren’t a lot of good choices. Try these nine easy DIY Halloween costumes this year.

Soap Silly

Whip up this quick and easy costume with just a few supplies. First, grab a pack of white or transparent balloons from the store. Next, grab a white T-shirt and a blue marker. Cut the sleeves off the t-shirt. Then, write the word SOAP in blue. Finally, add the balloons to your shirt and body to look like suds.

Make Pun of the News

Adults love to dress up for Halloween parties, but many costumes are for kids. Make this punny “newsflash” costume with just a few pieces. Take a short dress or a pair of shorts, and tape or safety pin sheets of newspaper all over. Then, wear a trench coat over the ensemble. When you meet up with your friends, open your coat and give them a “news flash.”

Avocado Toast

Parents need to get in on the dress-up fun, too. To make avocado toast, you’ll need two large pieces of cardboard, art supplies, and some string. Then, use paint or colored paper to create a large piece of toast and an avocado sliced in half.

The Spelling Bee

Another pun idea is to be a spelling bee. First, find a black and yellow-striped shirt, or make one by painting stripes with black fabric paint. Then, paint or tape letters or short words on your bee-inspired shirt. For bonus points, add a pair of bee wings or antennae.

Printable Masks

If you’re stumped for ideas or working with a budget, try printing or drawing a mask on cardstock. Then, your little ones can color or paint their masks. One idea is to find a unicorn mask. Finish the costume with white clothes and a cardstock horn you can attach to a headband.

Bloom Anywhere

Be a garden on the go with a cheap and fun flower pot costume. First, grab a round plastic laundry basket. Don’t forget the silk flowers and greenery. Then, use some gauzy, wide ribbon and weave it between the open slats of the laundry basket to mimic a flower arrangement basket.

Little Scuba Sal

Even the youngest can live their deep-diving dream with this costume. Save a two-liter bottle and spray paint it silver. Then, attach some clear tubing you can find at the hardware store. A white laundry soap cap (washed out) works perfectly for the regulator. Finally, dress your kid in all black, and use cardstock to cut out fins that will fit over their shoes. Don’t forget the mask!

A Cereal Good Time

You can make something fun with this costume and reuse old pool noodles. First, slice the pool noodles into one-inch discs. Then, cut the bottom out of an old, round laundry basket. Next, dress your little one in white (like the milk) and hot glue the pool noodle slices around the rim of the laundry basket bowl. Use suspenders or a ribbon to hold the bowl on, and your kid can carry a large ladle as the spoon.

Pig in a Blanket

Here’s a costume that’ll keep you warm and look cute. Grab some pink makeup and make yourself into a cute piggy. For the ears, you can make them by cutting pink pig ears out of cardstock and attaching them to a headband. And don’t forget about adding a piggy nose. You can dress in pink clothes and then wrap a blanket around you.
