It doesn’t matter if it’s in a can, bottle, or over ice. Dr. Pepper is one of the greatest beverages in the world, and you can celebrate it right here in Roanoke. The city is celebrating Dr. Pepper Day in Market Square in downtown Roanoke on Oct. 24. Come by from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. for free T-shirts, and products, but keep one thing in mind. The freebies are only available while supplies last. Get there early to make sure you get all your favorite products. Oh, and then stay for hours because it’s going to be a blast.
Why Is It on Oct. 24?
This date wasn’t picked at random. It has to do with the phrase, “Drink a bite to eat at 10, 2, and 4.” Apparently, your energy decreases during these times, so you can drink your bite to eat (i.e. grab a Dr. Pepper) at those times to get the boost you need.

Roanoke Loves Its Dr. Pepper
So, you understand the date, but what about Dr. Pepper? Why does the city have a day for this drink?
Well, Dr. Pepper has a long and storied history here. Dr. Charles T. Pepper opened up the now iconic Dr. Pepper’s Drug Store in the town of Rural Retreat in the 1800s. Dr. Pepper employed Wade Morrison, and Morrison finally made his way out of Rural Retreat and landed in Texas. He partnered with another guy, and they opened up a drug store. They created this new drink they called Dr. Pepper, and it was a hit in Texas.
The drink eventually made its way back to Virginia, when Bill Davis opened the Dr. Pepper bottling plant in Roanoke.
Guess what?
The people of Roanoke loved it.
That’s a huge understatement. The people in this city drank more per capita than any other place in the entire country between 1957 to 1959. They took a little break until 1961 when they did it again. Now, the city is holding strong. The people of Roanoke love their Dr. Pepper, and it’s time to celebrate.
