It shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone with a puppy that they need lots of exercise. But do you know the proper kinds of exercise they need? Not all kinds are equal and not all will result in the same tired pup. We tend to think of exercise as being strictly physical, but young puppies need mental exercise as well. Here are some easy and fun suggestions for how to exercise your puppy both mentally and physically in ways that are healthy for their young age.
Let Them Explore
Everything is a new experience to a puppy, so it’s no surprise that they’re curious about the world around them. Allowing them to safely explore the outdoors is an important part of their physical and mental exercise. Let them sniff every leaf and stick to their hearts’ content. Make sure your puppy is on a leash for this exploration so they’re safe and you can keep a close eye on them.
Toys And Playtime
Puppies love to chew on things, so give them toys that can get this desire out in a constructive way. Two types of toys are best for puppies, soft toys and teething toys. Soft toys can be anything that doesn’t have small pieces your puppy could possibly eat. They can be stuffed or flat. Teething toys are soft plastic toys made to withstand your puppies’ sharp teeth. Teething toys are great to release their chewing energy on something other than you or your clothing. Either of these toys is a great way to expose your puppy to various textures.

DIY Agility Course
These don’t have to be like the elaborate agility courses you see dogs compete in. For your puppy, it could be as simple as a wide plank of wood to walk over. Use all kinds of safe and sturdy materials in order to teach your dog how to walk over different textures. It also lets them know that these kinds of objects are safe to walk on or through.
