Should You Drive the 2017 Volvo XC60 or XC90?

Volvo XC60 XC90 Roanoke

If you are looking for a luxury SUV, then either the Volvo XC60 or the XC90 would be an excellent option. Both of these are packed with premium features and available in several different configurations. As Volvos, they have the same warranty and similar features, with their main differences being their size, price, and engines.

Pricing

The very first thing you will notice about these two Volvo SUVs is that the XC90 is the more expensive of the two. The 2017 XC60 starts at $40,950 while the 2017 XC90 starts at $45,750. This higher price tag does make sense since you are getting a larger vehicle with more seating and cargo room and a more powerful engine.

Engines and Efficiency

Both Volvo SUVs offer the choice of multiple engines. The XC90 comes with either a 250-horsepower 2-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder or a 316-horsepower 2-liter turbocharged and supercharged 4-cylinder. The two engines available for the XC60 have the same general specs but generate 240 and 302 horsepower, respectively. It is also noteworthy that the XC90 is available as a plug-in hybrid while the XC60 is not. Because the plug-in hybrid uses the supercharged and turbocharged engine and combines it with an electric motor, this option generates 400 net horsepower. The XC90 is the clear choice if you want the most power from your Volvo.

For those who want the best efficiency, you will prefer the XC90 Plug-In Hybrid. If you want a non-hybrid model, then the XC60 has an advantage over its larger cousin with up to 26 mpg combined. The XC90, meanwhile, has up to 24 mpg combined. The more powerful engine in either Volvo SUV gets 22 mpg combined.

Seating and Cargo

While the XC60 has the advantage in terms of efficiency and pricing, the XC90 is perfect for those who need additional interior space. That being said, the Volvo XC60 has more space than its class average with 30.8 cubes with all seats upright and 67 cubes with the rear seats folded. The XC90 won’t give you as much cargo space with all seats occupied, but folding down the rear seats can give you up to 85.7 cubes. Keep in mind that the XC90 also has three rows of seats while the XC60 has two.

Our Roanoke, Virginia, staff will likely recommend the XC60 to those who are on a tighter budget, want to maximize efficiency, or simply don’t need as much room. The XC90 will be ideal for larger families or those who want the plug-in hybrid.
