Great films don’t just entertain people. They introduce them to new ideas and challenge their belief systems. That is exactly what “An American Ascent” does. This documentary follows a group of nine African-Americans as they try to climb Denali. They were the first African-American expedition to attempt this grueling climb, and it’s amazing that it was captured on film. It’s a highly moving film, and it will change the way you see things in this world.
While movies are usually expensive to watch, you can see this one for free at Market Square on Sept. 28. The Roanoke Parks and Recreation Department will show the film on the outdoor movie screen starting at 7 p.m. Just bring a blanket or lawn chair and get ready to be moved.

What Do You Think About Adventure?
This documentary isn’t just about making it to the top of the towering mountain. Yes, climbing those 20,237 feet is quite an accomplishment, but that’s only part of the story. The real focus of the film is about the adventure gap. African-Americans are often told that they cannot climb mountains and engage in other outdoor adventures. Many grow up with that belief, so they never try.
It’s even worse for African-American females. As one of the climbers points out, mountain climbing has largely been a white male-dominated sport. When an African-American female decides to give it a try, she is sure to get lots of looks and maybe a few eye rolls.
Of course, that’s until they see that female dominate.
The group of African-American men and women will challenge what you think of adventure and make you realize that climbing a mountain is about so much more than making it to the top. It’s about the journey.
You’ll feel a sense of adventure when you watch this movie. You’ll be moved and ready to embark on your own getaway. That adventure can take many different forms, but one thing is true.
