The Harlem Globetrotters At The Berglund Center

Globetrotters
The Harlem Globetrotters have entertained crowds around the world since 1926, transforming the basketball court into a comedy stage. This March, they will visit Roanoke with their long-time rivals, the Washington Generals. Bring the whole family to watch their athletic antics!

When and Where

The game will take place at the coliseum at the Berglund Center on Wednesday, March 11. It will begin at 7 p.m. The coliseum is located at 710 Williamson Road, Roanoke, Virginia 24016.

Around the World Again

The Globetrotters have been taking their frenzied game on the road for nearly a century, and the current roster set out on a new world tour in late 2019. This adventure marks the team’s 94th year of steady touring, and they will visit 30 nations in addition to more than 200 games within the U.S.

Trick Shot Masters

Trick shots have become a creative way for athletes to show off their skills on the court, but they were a part of the Globetrotters’ repertoire long before YouTube popularized the stunts. With so many inventive groups performing incredible feats, as well as the team’s own long list of clever plays, the Globetrotters had to come up with something truly radical to keep pushing the envelope. Late last December, Hammer Harrison left the court altogether to execute a true record-setting stunt. The athlete ascended to 13,000 feet in a small plane, then performed the world’s first sky dive trick shot, dunking a goal just before returning to earth.

Sports Meet Theater

It’s easy to assume that the Harlem Globetrotters’ games have a foregone conclusion, especially when you see one of the players climbing up a ladder to slam dunk. However, the star-spangled team isn’t necessarily guaranteed a victory every time they play. Even though the Globetrotters plan out their comical antics and performance routines, they don’t have total control over the scoreboard. When the Generals have the ball, hijinks give way to an actual exhibition game, and both teams have a chance to demonstrate some straightforward athleticism.

Watch Out for the Generals

The perpetual underdog team has actually won a few games in the past. The most infamous upset was in 1971 when the Globetrotters got carried away with their larking and let the Generals pull ahead. With only seconds to go, Meadowlark Lemon missed his shot, and the Generals broke a 2,495-loss streak.
