When Jake Gyllenhaal and Ruth Wilson hit Broadway in the play “Constellations,” reviewers quickly took notice. The two-character drama was like nothing anyone had seen before and was praised for its sophistication. You might have missed Nick Payne’s play on Broadway, but now you can see it at the Mill Mountain Theatre through March 11. If you’ve seen one boy meets girl love story, you’ve seen them all, right? Well, a boy and girl might meet in “Constellations,” but this isn’t your standard love story. While “Constellations” uses that setup, it strays so far from the norm that you’ll forget that it shares a premise with countless other stories. Instead of going in a linear fashion, “Constellations” is all about what might have been. You’ll see alternatives play out and wonder about the differences between destiny and the choices you make.
So, just how does the viewer get to see all these alternate realities? The principles of quantum mechanics, relativity, and string theory are used to create alternate realities. Wow, that sounds pretty intense, but the play is surprisingly easy to follow. You don’t have to be Neil DeGrasse Tyson to follow along as the two ponder choices and destiny. Even better, you’ll relate to the characters. That’s what makes this play so refreshing. It might have a heady concept, but it’s impossible to not see yourself in the characters. You’ll feel their humanity and connect with them in new ways.
