Virginia is known for its green spaces, but none compare to Carvins Cove Natural Reserve. With more than 12,000 acres that include trails, forests, and a reservoir, this is the second biggest municipal park in the country. Since it’s so massive, you might not know where to begin. Let’s go over the top things to do at the natural reserve, so you can get the most out of your visit.
Hit the Trails
Carvins Cove Natural Reserve is home to around 60 miles of scenic trails, with many offering views of the reservoir. You can hike, bike, or even ride a horse along the various trails. They vary in length and difficulty, making it easy to find one for your outdoor style. Keep your eyes open for wildlife as you meander along the trails. You never know what you might see when you explore this natural reserve.
Go Fishing
Carvins Cove Natural Reserve is also an ideal spot to try your hand at fishing. At 630 acres, the reservoir might not be as large as some of the other lakes in the area, but it’s stocked full of fish. Hybrid striped bass and largemouth bass reign supreme in the reservoir, and you can reel in some big catches. There are ample places to fish along the shore or on a pier, or you can take a boat out. If you use a boat with a motor, it can’t be over 10 horsepower. Don’t worry if you don’t have your own boat. You can rent a jon boat or rowboat when you arrive.
Play in the Water
Swimming isn’t allowed at Carvins Cove Natural Reserve, but the reservoir is still open for aquatic fun. Stand-up paddleboarding and kayaking are both popular at the reservoir. Again, you can bring your own equipment or rent a kayak or stand-up paddleboard when you arrive. The water here is clear and calm, making it ideal for a day on the water. Keep in mind that if you rent a kayak, you can’t use it for fishing. However, you can bring your own fishing kayak if you want to double the fun.
